St. George's Day Parade 2023
On Friday, the 21st of April, St. George's was proudly represented by some Primary and Secondary students and teachers alongside other Aletheia Academies Trust schools, including Rosherville Church of England Academy, Shorne Church of England Primary School, and Holy Trinity Church of England School at the annual St. George’s Day parade in Gravesend.
The celebration, which was hosted by Cohesion Plus and supported by Gravesham Borough Council and Arts Council England, was a significant and unifying celebration of our diverse community. Cohesion Plus organised lantern-making workshops, facilitated by different artists in the local schools. Each school selected a different theme, with Saint George’s selecting England’s national tree, “the oak” as their theme.
Despite the rainy conditions, hundreds of people marched enthusiastically with their lanterns, flags and mascots in commemoration of England’s patron Saint. Starting outside St. Georges Church, they paraded together with other communities, performers, and guests including the Mayor of Gravesham, Cllr Peter Scollard and Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Rosemary Dymond.
In the words of Cohesion Plus’ Artistic Director and Aletheia Trustee, Gurvinder Sandher, “We’ve brought all communities together, urban, rural, young, old, regardless of background, regardless of faith, all coming together to celebrate what unites us rather than divides us.”
